Enter a world of mystery, magic and master storytelling, brought to life by a superb cast of actors, dancers, and innovative designers.
Experience the legendary Kiwi adventure that captivated a generation, live on stage for the very first time. A must-see event for anyone 8 years and older.
Recipient of the Margaret Mahy Award, Maurice Gee is one of New Zealand’s best-loved writers. Under the Mountain was adapted for a 1981 television mini-series and a 2009 film. Now, Pip Hall (Why Does Love?, The 53rd Victim, Shudder, The Woman Who Loved a Mountain), is bringing one of Aotearoa’s favourite novels to the stage in a contemporary adaption.
This New Zealand premiere production will be directed by Sara Brodie, whose spectacular stage skills were last seen in Auckland Theatre Company’s The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.
Under the Mountain was commissioned by Auckland Theatre Company with support from the ATC Patrons.

Younger audiences will be thrilled to find a perilous cosmic battle unfolding in their own backyards
Clever technology married physical articulation to evoke childhood memories of the thrill and mystery of Maurice Gee's Under the Mountain at the ASB Waterfront Theatre last night.
ASB season of Under the Mountain is a cracking fantasy that will stimulate and entertain children and adults alike. It’s part adventure, part thriller and all action. It’s equally a heartfelt show with poignant messages about love and loyalty. Recommended.
Director Sara Brodie created a marvellous production, full of childish wonder but with seriously nasty villains.
